Father Leo Clifford, O.F.M.
« on: July 27, 2010, 09:16:pm »

Is Fr. Leo Clifford, O.F.M. still alive? Father has been broadcasted daily on EWTN for as long as I can remember (i.e.: the 1990s). However, even as a child he struck me as being long in the tooth. Is the old man still around? He has a good style of oratory.

I love that man!
To thee, O Blessed Virgin, I recite
 prayers that are fitting for each holy rite;
 May'st thou with loving mother's heart be nigh
 To be my help, what time I come to die.

I'd also like to know if he's still alive. One of my favorite reflections of his (and I hope it's not in the video presented, which I am unable to view at this time) was about the Asian version of heaven and hell. They were the same scenario - a long table spread with sumptuous foods and with people seated across the table from each other. But when they went to pick up the chopsticks, they were much too long to get the food in their mouths! So the people in hell starved to death, while the people in heaven fed their neighbor across the table. Pretty clever.

EWTN doesn't let ya know if they are dead or alive. I watched an early morning program with this priest from New Orleans for years as I was coming back, then had my schedule changed. I found out years later he was dead when the program was running. I was stunned because I felt like he was helping me in real time. Time does not affect God, is all I could grasp.

I liked him, too, but I no longer get EWTN. I searched on line and found a mention of him having passed the "70 years as a friar" mark. Must be him. The date of this publication was September, and Fr. Clifford is mentioned on page 24.

Correction. The date on the publication was September 2007. If he is still alive, he must be in his 90s at least.

I like him very much too!  He is one of the last good things left on EWTN.

You just had to throw that in.
