Novena for the Holy Father

The Knights of Columbus are encouraging the faithful to participate in a novena for Pope Benedict XVI which will begin on Divine Mercy Sunday, April 11, and conclude on April 19, the fifth anniversary of the Pontiff's election.

“During these days of unprecedented challenge for our Church and our Holy Father, it is vitally important for all Catholics to be united in prayer,” said Bishop William E. Lori of Bridgeport, Supreme Chaplain of the Knights of Columbus in a video message. “To this end the Knights of Columbus invite you to join in a special novena for Pope Benedict the XVI.”

“Over the centuries, the Church has always overcome the challenges it faces stronger, wiser and more holy,” the bishop added. “I have no doubt that the same will hold true now especially with the prayers and support of faithful Catholics throughout the world.”

The brief novena entreats a “spirit of courage and right judgment” for our “shepherd, Benedict,” that the Pontiff may build the Church “into a sacrament of unity, love and peace for all the world.” Copies of the novena prayer cards can be printed out free of charge or ordered.

PRAYER FOR POPE BENEDICT XVI

Lord, source of eternal life and truth,

give to your shepherd, Benedict, a spirit

of courage and right judgment, a spirit

of knowledge and love. By governing

with fidelity those entrusted to his care,

may he, as successor to the Apostle

Peter and Vicar of Christ, build your

Church into a sacrament of unity, love

and peace for all the world. Amen.

V/ Let us pray for Benedict, the pope.

R/ May the Lord preserve him,

give him a long life,

make him blessed upon the earth,

and not hand him over

to the power of his enemies.

V/ May your hand

be upon your holy servant.

R/ And upon your son,

whom you have anointed.

Our Father… Hail Mary… Glory Be…

I want to bump this up, because I think prayer at this time is essential.

did everybody notice that you can print out novena prayer cards from the K of C site?  they have a nice color photo of Pope Benedict for one side so they'll make a nice memento as well.

Viva Papa Benedetto!
My pastor led a novena prayer which is similar to the one you posted after Mass was ended, but it's not entirely the same.

Alternate novena in hieratic English Wrote:O God, who art the Pastor and Governor of them that put their trust in thee; look down in mercy on thy servant Benedict, whom thou has chosen to be pastor and ruler of thy Church. Grant unto him, we beseech thee, a spirit of courage and right judgement, that he and all thy whole Church may be preserved and strengthened against every adversity; through Jesus Christ thy Son our Lord, who liveth and reigneth with thee, in the unity of the Holy Ghost ever, one God, world without end. Amen.

V. Let us pray for the Holy Father, Pope Benedict.
R. May the Lord preserve him, give him a long life, make him blessed upon the earth, and not hand him over to the power of his enemies.

V. May thy hand, O Lord, be upon thy servant;
R. Whom thou hast anointed, to be a priest forever after the order of Melchisedek.
