But I thought gays were completely different from pedophiles?  Crazy

ROME — A 73-year-old Italian priest has been arrested in Milan for allegedly abusing a foreign teenager over three years, ANSA news agency has reported.

Domenico Pezzini, from the diocese of Lodi, was arrested on Monday over allegations that he sexually abused the alleged victim from the age of 13 to 16.

The alleged victim, who is now an adult, could have been helped financially by the priest.

He had apparently confided to his teachers of the alleged abuse. The teachers found him disturbed.

During a search in the residence of Pezzini, who is well-known in homosexual circles as the coordinator of gay groups studying the question of homosexuality and religion, police found pornographic material, the news agency said.

The Vatican has been under attack recently over allegations that the Church has for years been protecting paedophile (not 'gay' mind you -- Iuvenalis) priests from prosecution by merely moving abusers to other parishes.

They mostly are.  Smile The priestly sexual abuse crisis isn't about pedophilia, though, since about 85% of victims are post-pubescent (and male).  The priestly sexual abuse crisis is about homosexual men who like to have sex with very young men, as many homosexual men do.

On the other hand... don't you think that lifting the celibacy rule would cure this problem?  After all, if you take a normally-adjusted heterosexual male who vows a life of celibacy, if he's going to cheat, he's not going to do with with women - women that he meets in bars, online, etc.  No, he's going to chase alter boys.  That much should be obvious.

It's not obvious to me.  I would never chase men; I'd go to a hooker first.  Plus today they have "altar girls".  On top of that, Church history is full of the illegitimate children of Cardinals, Bishops, and even Popes.  Priests have broken the vow of celibacy probably 20 minutes after it was first implemented.

I think celibacy making someone gay is a false conclusion.  These men have homosexual inclinations before they become priests, so when they fall, it is with a man not a woman.

As far as homosexual men liking young men, I don't think that is a homosexual thing.  You can't swing a dead cat without hitting a "Barely Legal" or "I'm 18!" heterosexual porn advertisement on the internet.  In the case of priests, I think it is because the younger victims are more naive.  You can't con a 40 year old with street smarts into some of the things these priests do, especially to keep it quiet.  They're counting on the naiveté and fear of authority of younger people.  That's why they are predators even if it isn't truly pedophilia.  It's like a 40 year old man scoping 16 year olds at the high school.  Young and stupid is always a target.

They are different.  Pedophiles don't care (mostly) what gender a child is.  All that matters to a pedophile is having sex with a vulnerable child (pre-pubescent) who can't defend themselves.  This is an act of extreme violence.  As the other poster pointed out, these priests you are hearing about are more than likely homosexual men who made the choice to become priests but couldn't fulfill the celibacy / chastity vow.  Since priests are around boys/men who are past puberty (more so than being around women) it compounds the temptation for these homosexual priests.
If you're hetero then barmaids in out of the way saloons are very good hunting grounds, just saying.

If you're going to be ironic, smilies are helpful, i.e.:  Rolling eyes

Or, this is always a dead giveaway:

Happy to help.  Tip o' the hat

It wasn't irony - it was SARCASM!!!

Ok; I'm not too well-known here.  My second paragraph was nothing but SARCASM!!!

Irony, sarcasm...meh...some of the egg heads around here get all apoplectic over such distinctions, but I don't.  I was pretty sure you were using an outrageous statement to make an obvious point...so, yea.... Tip o' the hat
Marriage (to a woman) has been proven to cure homosexual attraction to teenage boys in virtually all cases.

That's exactly what's being suggested by those who blame celibacy for priestly sexual abuse.

But - wait a minute - isn't sexual orientation set at birthHuh??  GeneticallyHuh??  Isn't it rather, uh, offensive to even suggest that it should - much less could - be changed?

Ah, how broad the possibilities are when one is not constrained by logic or consistency!  Pass the corn nuts.
