I've seen these all my life but only just realised they're there (if that makes any sense) - I'm talking about round metal disks embedded on either side of the anteporta in churches. They're marked with a cross, and inscribed. Most of them are quite worn, so presumably the faithful are/were in the habit of touching them. Nobody seems to do that now. What's their purpose/history?

They look a bit like St Benedict's medal, only big.
