"CAMDEN — Rutgers University in Camden will host a woman theologian next week whom the university describes as a “female Catholic bishop.”

“Roman Catholic Bishop Patricia Fresen, one of only three ordained female bishops in the world,” will lecture at the university at 12:20 p.m. April 15, according to a Rutgers news release.

Fresen was excommunicated from the Roman Catholic Church in 2008, according to CatholicCulture.org.

“Patricia Fresen is not a Roman Catholic bishop. That would be the position of the Diocese of Camden,” said Peter Feuerherd, diocesan spokesman, on Monday when contacted about Rutgers’ symposium.

The lecture is being sponsored by Rutgers-Camden’s department of philosophy and religion and the gender and women’s studies program.

The university holds monthly symposiums at which sometimes controversial topics are discussed, said John Wall, an associate professor of religion.

A colleague of his had heard that Fresen would be in the Philadelphia area for another talk, “so we invited her,” he said. “Fortunately, she agreed to come.”

Wall said he had not heard that Fresen was excommunicated, but knew that she had to give up a teaching position after her ordination."

When I was in San Diego, I inquired into the St. Thomas More Society. The initial meeting that I would be attending featured a speaker: "Jane Via, Catholic Priest."  I emailed the president of the society to ask "HUH???"  Of course, he saw nothing wrong with it, except of course for the fact that party-pooper, closed-minded Neanderthals like me might object to Jane Via running around fraudulently calling herself a Catholic priest.  Needless to say, I could not join an organization that participated in such fraud while calling itself a Catholic association.

And I doubt St. Thomas More himself would be pleased with that society naming itself after him, who accepted death than bowing to Henry VIII's demands (which set up a "church" with female "bishops" and "priests.")
Haha this thread had me worried for a second - just yesterday I saw that Rutgers was having Snooki from the Jersey Shore come and give a talk...and then I saw the title here.  I wouldn't put it past her.

$32,000 to have someone talk about booze and tanning.  I'm not sure which of these two talks I'd pick.

I'd pick Snooki.  What's not to like about booze and tanning?  A beer on the beach is a good way to pass an afternoon.
