Anti-Defamation League criticizes words of Harrisburg bishop
By Myles Snyder ABC27 news  Jan 25, 2012

HARRISBURG, Pa. (WHTM) -

The regional director of the Anti-Defamation League has criticized Harrisburg Bishop Joseph McFadden for his comments in the debate over school vouchers.

McFadden, who supports taxpayer-funded vouchers that would help parents pay for tuition at Catholic schools, told abc27 News last week that he worries about a monopolistic public school system.

"In a totalitarian government, they would love our system," McFadden said last week. "This is what Hitler and Mussolini and all those tried to establish, a monolith, so all the children would be educated in one set of beliefs and one way of doing things."

ADL Regional Director Barry Morrison issued a statement Wednesday in which he said McFadden's words were "careless" and represented "a trivialization of the Holocaust."

"We respect the Bishop and his position in the Church," Morrison wrote. "We appreciate his commitment the education of children and the viability of Catholic schools. However, he should not be making his point at the expense of the memory of six million Jews and millions of others who perished in the Holocaust."

"The Holocaust was a unique experience," he continued. "It does not lend itself to inappropriate analogies. We have an obligation to protect the memory of those who suffered because of it from those who would distort it and undermine and trivialize the history of the Holocaust, however inadvertently. Our role should be to honor those who fought to defeat the murderous Nazis, and not to inappropriately draw reckless comparisons."

Bad faith on the part of Barry Morrison. Nobody's that stupid. The bishop didn't even mention the holocaust; he mentioned the totalitarian systems of Hitler and Mussolini. How many death camps did Mussolini have? Was German statism just fine and dandy except for the fact that it killed Jews?
Wait, he was talking about public schools in Germany and Italy...not the holocaust...right?  Did he even mention the holocaust?

Huh?

LOL Eye-roll

As far as I can tell the good Bishop never mentioned the word. I guess using any terms closely associated with it is still considered politically incorrect and grounds for reproof.
Why does everything have to come back to the Holocaust? (That is a rhetorical question.)

It seems you're damned if you do (say anything) and damned if you don't.

Why doesn't the ADL go police some real violators of the 11th Commandment ('Thou Shalt Not Deny the Holocaust') like Bp. Williamson!  Mr. Winky
The ADL is no longer relevent and have themselves to blame.  Petulant children...

Did they protest the soup nazi episode of Seinfeld as well?
It sounds like the ADL wants exclusive rights to talking about Hitler.  Eye-roll
