Full Version: The Longest Reigning Bishop in the USA

Bishop Howard Hubbard is 73 and has the record for the longest reign as of today.  He was made a Bishop by Pope Paul VI at the very young age of 38 in 1977 and has been in charge of the Albany, New York diocese for an incredible 35 years. In the Pre-Vatican 2 era Bishops didn't have to retire at age 75 like they do today, so it was very common for Bishops running a diocese for 40 or more years, but since Pope Paul VI changed the rules to make retirement when they reach their 75th birthday, few Bishops reign even 20 years , most are in office 10-15 years. Do you think the old way was better when they were retired by God at their death or today's 75 years. By the way Bishop Hubbard is one of the last modernist's reigning, many of his compatriot's having retired or died such as Bernardin, Roach, Gumbleton. Dearden, ettc etc etc........

If he's a modernist, he isn't reigning. He's occupying.

Absolutely; the rule RE the exclusion of 80+ year-old cardinals at conclaves is equally absurd.
Many of the retired Bishops who are past 75-80 today are still healthy enough (bodily speaking) to run their diocese. But Spiritually Speaking they were too old 30-40 years ago.
