UPDATE from 19.00 clock: a new statement from the SSPX: "The desire for further clarifications could usher in a new series of meeting" - The Vatican plans to offer a personal prelature

The Vatican on Wednesday evening consulted with the leadership of the SSPX on the progress of the ecclesiastical unity efforts. The prefect of the Congregation of the Faith, Cardinal William Levada, gave the Superior of the Priestly Society of St. Pius X, Bernard Fellay, in a detailed interview at the headquarters of his curial body, the official response of the Pope.

Benedict XVI had informed Levada and the Secretary of the Congregation, Luis Francisco Ladaria on Saturday of his decision on the course of dialogue with the traditionalists. It focuses on the so-called doctrinal preamble, which had been submitted by he Vatican to the SSPX, after one and a half years of expert consultations, as a basis for agreement. It is not clear yet, whether and and with what modifications, Fellay will accept this preamble- also unknown is the vote of the Pope

Pope maintains generous offer of Personal Prelature for break away group of Lefebvrists
2012-06-14 17:51:12

Cardinal Levada, the prefect of the Congregation for the Doctrine of the Faith, delivered a message to the leader of the Lefebvrists group, Bishop Bernard Fellay. It was a proposal by the Pope to finally make amends over the split between the Society of St. Pius X and the Vatican.

To achieve this, Benedict XVI has offered a Personal Prelature for the group to be in total communion with Rome.

FR. FEDERICO LOMBARDI
Vatican spokesman
“During this meeting, they were given a document with the proposal of a personal prelature, as the most appropriate way for a possible canonical recognition of the Fraternity.”

The final decision for a total communion with the Catholic Church now depends on Bishop Fellay, who has said that he will give the answer in “reasonable time”.

FR. FEDERICO LOMBARDI
Vatican spokesman
“The Fraternity has its general chapter during the first week of July, so it will also be an opportunity for leaders of the Fraternity to reflect on this issue.”

A Personal Prelature is a very flexible institutional structure of the Catholic church similar to a diocese. But unlike a diocese, they are not bound geography, rather by the shared mission of its members.
