How do we know if we are being tempted or being led astray by the devil, or what we are experiencing is just our fallen nature working against us? For instance does the devil attack usa with things such as depression or is it just our bad genes or original sin? How do we know?

I don't think the devil caused the depression, except remotely perhaps.  Anyway, it was pretty much a world wide economic disaster, not just in the US.

Temptations are only a sin when we give into them.  In that sense, does it matter where they originate?  We shouldn't blame the devil for everything but we shouldn't ignore him either.  In any event, the answer is prayer and mortification.

All of the above.  How do you know?  Assume it is always happening on some level.  You have a Guardian Angel constantly protecting you.  You also have fallen angels constantly poking at you looking for a weakness to exploit.  God allows them to do this in order to bring you closer and make  you more dependent on Him and His provisions.  Thoughts an temptations that come out of nowhere and have no known trigger can be a clue that you're getting antagonized.

There is no set pattern.  You could be left alone if you just get holier, or the bad guys could get clumsier and reveal themselves more overtly through their own stupidity.

Stay close to the confessional, the Rosary, Traditional Holy Water or Lourdes Water,  St. Michael (chaplet of St. Michael) Your Guardian, St. Joseph and remember you have Our Lord and His friends who scare the baddies much worse than the baddies can scare you.

I love your sense of humour!
The world, the flesh and the devil!
Well, if it goes away with the name of Jesus, or imprecations, then there can be an aspect of demonic torment. But I think humans are too complex to say all one or the other. Demonic torment can cause physical changes, and physical changes can weaken someone to be more susceptible to demons. I play it on the safe side and rid him and his minions at any time, even if just feeling a bit moody and snapping at people.
Are negative thoughts continually from the devil or are they from our fallen body. How about nerves and deep depression? How do you overcome these , people pray to God but he doesn't heal them and anybody who has had deep depression and other mental issues they are far more fearful than other physical infirmities. When your brain/mind goes wrong it is very dangerous.

It would be able to be determined by eliminating causes. For example, if one's ailment gets better after a prayer against demonic influence, then it would imply there was a link.

However, most temptation is caused by concupiscence. http://nonpeccabis.blogspot.com/2012/02/...cence.html

This concept is generalised as the drive of human nature towards good being corrupted and becoming inordinate. That is why many "bad" things are based on good, because they are not bad in themselves, but being misused. If something is based on a good desire, but being misdirected or having an inordinate influence, then it is likely not a specific demonic temptation.

In fact, most of the time I bet that demons are not directly involved unless they are invited by ourselves in some fashion. This can be easier than one may think.

Usually from our body.

This life is full of misery. We call it a valley of tears for a reason.
