The Italian caption reads:
L'immagine del giorno è di Alessandro Di Meo, fotografo dell'agenzia Ansa. Il fotoreporter è riuscito a catturare la caduta di un fulmine sulla cupola di San Pietro proprio nel giorno dell'annuncio delle dimissioni di papa Benedetto XVI

My own translation:
Today's picture is by Alessandro Di Meo, photographer of the Ansa agency. The photojournalist was able to capture a lightning bolt falling on the cupola of Saint Peter's, on the very day of pope Benedict XVI's resignation announcement.
Nice shot!
Wow
Okay, I normally don't get too into conspiracy theories and all that, but....

this is all starting to get just a bit too weird.  afraidsmiley

Don't stress it.  I'll bet the dome gets hit in most lightning storms.  It's the price it pays for being a tall building...

True. My comment was half in jest. The other half.... well, more frequent confessions sure couldn't hurt! As long as I have access to a Catholic priest, I am not overly anxious.

There do seem to be far too many coincidences coinciding here though.  Crazy!
It's a poignant picture, just leave it at that.

Yes.  I think it is very moving, and that most Catholics would think so. It doesn't matter how often lightning strikes, it is meaningful here and now.
It's already making the rounds on Facebook...with the caption, "Buckle up, I don't feel good about the future" or something like that.
