Quote:A right-wing historian shot himself dead in front of hundreds of tourists at the altar of Notre Dame Cathedral in Paris today, apparently in protest at France's legalisation of gay marriage.

Dominique Venner, who had recently been campaigning against gay marriage in France, is said to have calmly walked past the crowds milling around the 850-year-old Cathedral, one of the most popular tourist sites in the world, before taking out a Herstal automatic pistol.

The 78-year-old put the gun in his mouth and fired before collapsing on to the altar, according to French media reports.

Probably not the best way to protest.

Lord have mercy on his soul Pray

Venner was apparently a well known historian and writer of the Benoist-type right-wing, and was also an OAS man in the 1960s. A few news articles are incorrectly reporting he was a Catholic, he was actually irreligious and criticized Christianity, but was friendly with the Catholic cause on many issues including gay marriage. Here's an article on his suicide from an acquaintance of his, the priest Guillaume de Tanoüarn of the IBP.

A sad end.

Probably Venner was depressive but his suicide is a gesture of despair before the decadence of West societies and peculiarly that of France.
Pray Notre Dame Cathedral and the altar will have to be reconsecrated after this.

This is what they are trying to drive us all to.  Not necessarily suicide, but the despair and frustration at not being able to make a difference and reverse the downward spiral.  The deck is stacked against us in this world.  But not in the next.

I hope God had mercy on his tormented soul.
