From an old, unanswered post. I sometimes wonder where people come up with these ideas! LOL

Quote:The Holy Spirit was not invoked at the beginning of Vatican II. However, where are the texts that show that He was invoked at other councils? Please assist.

The Prayer, invoking the Holy Ghost, used before every Session of the Council:

We stand before you, Holy Spirit,
conscious of our sinfulness,
but aware that we gather in your name.

Come to us, remain with us,
and enlighten our hearts.

Give us light and strength
to know your will,
to make it our own,
and to live it in our lives.

Guide us by your wisdom,
support us by your power,
for you are God, sharing the glory of Father and Son.

You desire justice for all;
enable us to uphold the rights of others;
do not allow us to be misled by ignorance
or corrupted by fear or favor.

Unite us to yourself in the bond of love
and keep us faithful to all that is true.

As we gather in your name, may we temper justice with love,
so that all our discussions and reflections
may be pleasing to you, and earn the reward
promised to good and faithful servants.

We ask this of You who live and reign with the
Father and the Son, one God, for ever and ever. Amen.
We are ignorant of most of our ignorance. Wink

"Involved" in what sense?

If you mean "involved" by invoking infallibility, then I would say that the Holy Spirit was indeed not involved; if you mean "involved" in the sense of whether or not the Holy Spirit provided assistance to the Council Fathers as he does for anyone else when we ask for it, then I agree, he was involved.

I think that you may have misread "involved" when the OP said "invoked"  Smile

Whoops! Thanks for the catch. My point still stands, however.

Maybe the Holy Ghost was "invoked" but not "involved"?  LOL.
Maybe this is a good reason why we should pray for the Holy Father.

O God, the Shepherd and Ruler of all Your faithful people, mercifully look upon Your servant Francis, whom You have chosen as the chief Shepherd to preside over Your Church. We beg You to help him edify, both by word and example, those over whom he has charge, that he may reach everlasting life together with the flock entrusted to him. Through Christ our Lord. Amen.  Pray
