Democratic presidential candidate Bernie Sanders is making a one-of-a-kind campaign stop — at the Vatican.

The Vermont senator was invited out of the blue Friday by Pope Francis to speak at an April 15 church conference on social, economic and environmental issues.

Sanders will then return to New York for the final days of campaigning before the April 19 primary.

While a Jewish socialist from Brooklyn and an Argentine Catholic pontiff sounds like an odd couple, Sanders said the two shared similar views on many issues — particularly the economy and specifically the 1% of America’s wealthiest people.

“He’s talking about the idolatry of money, the worship of money, the greed that’s out there,” said a clearly thrilled Sanders in a Friday appearance on MSNBC’s “Morning Joe” program.

“He’s trying to inject a sense of morality into how we do economics. And we need that, absolutely, desperately.”

Sanders described himself as a “big, big fan of the pope,” and has invoked Pope Francis during his increasingly contentious campaign against front-runner Hillary Clinton. Pope Francis in return described Sanders as a “world leader.”

The idea of a so-called “moral economy” as espoused by the Pope “is an issue that is very dear to my heart,” Sanders said.

But a senior Vatican official told Bloomberg News that Sanders — in a show of “monumental discourtesy” — lobbied for a spot at the annual Pontifical Academy of Social Sciences conference.

“Sanders made the first move, for the obvious reasons,” charged Academy president Margaret Archer. “I think in a sense he may be going for the Catholic vote.

“But this is not the Catholic vote and he should remember that and act accordingly — not that he will.”

A Sanders campaign spokesman did not return a call for comment on the Archer allegation.

The socialist Democrat has won six of the last seven Democratic primaries or caucuses, with the New York race shaping up as critical for both candidates. The April 15 Vatican visit will come the day after a crucial Clinton-Sanders debate in his native borough.

Sanders, who said he hopes to meet with the pope next week, offered a quick preview of what to expect from his address to the Vatican crowd.

“I will ... be addressing the planetary crisis of climate change and the moral imperative to make sure we leave this planet in a way that is healthy and habitable for future generations,” said Sanders.

Sanders, during his morning show visit, said the pope’s views on global wealth and morality were far more radical than his.

“Read what the pope is writing,” said Sanders. What he is saying is not only that we have to pay attention to what he calls the dispossessed ... (But) how our whole culture is based on ‘I need more and more and more, and I don’t have to worry about veterans sleeping out on the street or elderly people who cant afford their prescription drugs.’”

Never a dull moment with Francis.

I even went to check if this wasn't a April Fools' article.

Its no secret that Francis bents to the far left and is fond of commies. He has already invited leaders of far left movements from Latin America to speak at Vatican events and whatnot. At the very least one hopes Sanders doesn't make this kind of faux pas.

Notice how Francis will do this or condemn Trump for wanting to build a border wall, but when asked about homosexual marriage or something similar he claims that he doesn't want to get involved in politics.

Anyway, the whole thing is kind of sad. I mean, does the Vatican think that riding Sanders's coattails will get campus socialists to start going to Mass?

Yeah inviting politicians to speak at Vatican events....... all I have to say is WOW! If a conservative candidate was asked, the left would be screaming bloody murder. Hypocrites!

The only political entity that should ever be allowed to work with a pope should be a King... A legitimate sovereign. Not a petty demagogue.

I don't think so. I think that the people who invited him probably don't care at all if anyone goes to mass. I have known many, many priests who are socialists first, and, noticing that some people listen to them on account of being Catholic and them being priests, use it as an opportunity to preach socialism. I went to a Jesuit university, and I recognize the "leftist Jesuit" MO in almost everything I'm seeing from the Vatican lately.  I'm not questioning Francis's legitimacy as pope, I'm just pointing out that only a twistedly "charitable" interpretation of his actions makes him anything other than your typical elderly socialist Jesuit.
