Full title: Flashback: Pope’s retreat preacher speaks on Antichrist as a ‘pacifist, ecologist and ecumenist’

From LifeSiteNews:

"In the light of current events in the world and in the Catholic Church, it seems important to resurrect an especially thought-provoking 2007 article by LifeSite's John-Henry Westen re-published below. That article was widely quoted at the time and for good reason as you will see."

Aaaand then there was Francis.

(of course JP II was the king of ecumenism..)

The Catholic Encyclopedia article on “Antichrist” suggests St. Bernard believed that the Antichrist would be an antipope:

“...St. Bernard speaks in the passage of the Antipope [as the Beast of the Apocalypse].” The Catholic Encyclopedia, Volume 1, “Antichrist,” Robert Appleton Co. 1907, p. 561.

Bl. Joachim (d. 1202): “Towards the end of the world, Antichrist will overthrow the pope and usurp his see.”  Rev. Culleton, The Reign of Antichrist, Tan Books, 1974, p. 130.

What better way to deceive even the elect by the Antichrist than to pose falsely as the Holy Father?  Maybe, maybe not but  food for thought, if nothing else.

I think an Anti-Pope fits the definition of the Antichrist better than anyone.
thanks very much for posting this.
You're welcome, Pdudgeon. :)

BC, there's also this quote by St. Francis of Assisi:

"The devils will have unusual power, the immaculate purity of our Order, and of others, will be so much obscured that there will be very few Christians who will obey the true Sovereign Pontiff and the Roman Church with loyal hearts and perfect charity. At the time of this tribulation a man, not canonically elected, will be raised to the Pontificate, who, by his cunning, will endeavour to draw many into error and death.

...

Some preachers will keep silence about the truth, and others will trample it under foot and deny it. Sanctity of life will be held in derision even by those who outwardly profess it, for in those days Jesus Christ will send them not a true Pastor, but a destroyer."
