I think it would be helpful if we posted the distasteful looking churches while praying that someone will come along and show the building some love, since it is God's house. While some churches can't necessarily afford anything fancy, they can still be designed in a tasteful way. Some of the churches that will be posted here cost millions of dollars and look unsightly. Think about how many people go to these churches and are left uninspired by the aesthetics when those same aesthetics normally should aid in the focus of the mind, heart, and soul toward Jesus and the Mass. It would be a Lenten act of penance and reparation.

So, with the hope that someone will come to one or more of these churches one day and make it prettier (and with the Most Beautiful Churches thread as a handy antidote to these pictures), here we go.

My Mom called churches like these "Our Lady of the Locker Room". Sticking tongue out at you

She also said there is a warm place in hell for architects!  LOL

When inside they tend to sound like "Our Lady of the Maytag". Ugh!

And here is St. Mary of the Assumption, San Francisco:

Wow, that church looks so disorienting on the inside.

I think "disorienting" is a key term in describing these monstrosities.  They are marked by dissonance.

Hmmm.....what could it all meanHuh??
There's a plan by the Freemasons and Communists to infiltrate the Church. If you look up 'Alta Vendita' as well as 'Bella Dodd,' you can learn more. Bella was received back into the Church by Archbishop Fulton Sheen. She blew the lid on the whole Communist plot. When someone is trying to subvert and change a religion for their own personal ends, it's going to become visually different.

" Ex-Communist and celebrated convert Douglas Hyde revealed long ago that in the 1930s the Communist leadership issued a worldwide directive about infiltrating the Catholic Church. While in the early 1950s, Mrs. Bella Dodd was also providing detailed explanations of the Communist subversion of the Church. Speaking as a former high ranking official of the American Communist Party, Mrs. Dodd said: "In the 1930s we put eleven hundred men into the priesthood in order to destroy the Church from within." The idea was for these men to be ordained and progress to positions of influence and authority as Monsignors and Bishops. A dozen years before Vatican II she stated that: "Right now they are in the highest places in the Church"  —  where they were working to bring about change in order to weaken the Church's effectiveness against Communism. She also said that these changes would be so drastic that "you will not recognise the Catholic Church." "

These monstrosities can't be made prettier. They need to be razed, and the ground they sat on sprinkled with blessed salt and re-consecrated. Then the Powers That Be should form a committee consisting of trad priests, Fishies, and any Catholics from the Art Renewal Center when building new church buildings. Someone like a Fr. Ripperger gets the final say as to what gets built.

Eh, one can dream...

Your idea is better. Some of these would be really hard to renovate on the outside, and their structures are such that they'd be hard to fix from the inside.

New prayer suggestion: a prayer that these churches will be replaced by new, more traditional ones.
