Peace.....I read Fr Sommerville's letter to the Church, through search on FishEaters.  It touched me quite deeply as I knew him personally and he spoke those very words to me explaining what he did and how much he regretted it.  I remember telling him at the time, and I am sure many did, that he simply didn't really understand what was taking place and a lot was flying over his head quickly.  He never returned to doing the Novus Ordo Mass but would do and promote the Tridentine with all his heart.  He was well loved by many - so very well educated in the Church and wrote several hymns for the hymnals.  He was an educator at St Michael's Choir School in Toronto for those who may not know.  There is more to Fr Sommerville, but I think this makes the point.

He passed away in a home where many religious go in Toronto.

May the souls of the faithful departed through the mercy of God rest in peace.....

God bless, angeltime Heart

Peace.....if you go to "search" on FE and type in SSPX schism - a list of readings will come up - Fr Stephen Sommerville's open letter to the Church is there explaining how he was involved in the Vat11 changes of the Liturgy (language) and then how he renounced all involvement asking for apology.

He was a priest in the Toronto Archdiocese, well-known through the St Michael's Choir School and his composing of hymns.  He also knew Mel Gibson (who bought Fr S a new pair of shoes) and went to visit Mel's' Chapel in USA where the Tridentine Mass was happening!  I don't know the details of this part of the story.

God bless, angeltime Heart

He was one of the original translators of the Novus Ordo into English.

He repented of it later.

Peace.....I am wondering if Fr Sommerville would ever be considered as a Saint having the holy remorse and repentence he had for his part in the Liturgy change.  Of course, I do not see Pope Fr giving this any attention, but perhaps one day - there may by someone else who will!

When I was living in a small town in N Ontario, I received a phone call from the local priest who asked me if I knew Fr Sommerville and I said, "yes, why?"  He explained that Fr S was in town with a group of Philipino people wanting to have a Latin Mass at our Parish.  So, because I had a key to the Parish, the priest asked me to let them in to have it.  So, I did and stayed for the Mass as well.  I don't even know if anyone in authority other than the priest, knew he was there, but at least the local priest was accommodating and I didn't ask anything further.  God bless, angeltime Heart
