Originally called the Feast of Our Lady of Victory, this Feast was instituted by Pope St Pius V to honour Our Lady for Her intercession at the great Battle of Lepanto on this date in 1571. He had called upon all of Christendom to pray the Rosary for the success of the Christian fleet under the command of Don John of Austria.

Don John carried a huge banner into the battle, embroidered with a large Crucifix.

The Muslim jihadists carried a 'sacred' banner inscribed with the name of their moon god, Allah. The Muslim banner was cut down in the moment of victory!

St Pius was in Consistory with his Cardinals on the day of the battle. Of a sudden, he said, 'This is no time for business. Let us give thanks for the great Christian victory'. This was a miraculous event, because written news of the victory did not arrive in Rome for a further two weeks, on 21 October. St Pius recited the opening of the Nunc dimittisNunc dimittis servum tuum, Domine, secundum verbum tuum in pace:Quia viderunt oculi mei salutare tuum, (Now thou dost dismiss thy servant, O Lord,  * according to thy word in peace; Because my eyes have seen * thy salvation.) in thanksgiving. He died the following May.

In this time of renewed jihad, as the Muslims attack militarily and invade 'peacefully', let us invoke Our Lady of Victory by the power of Her Rosary for victory for Christendom one more time!
