As opposed to who ? Merkel, Macron, Sanchez ?

It's weird that Putin (like Trump) is, on the whole, using his temporal power and authority to advance the cause of Christ and hold the forces of chaos and evil at bay. Everyone who hates them also hates us and yet we remain suspicious. Even if it's all PR and not a realization by these men that their entire civilizations rest on the Faith that built them it's more than we've had from anyone in ages and I'm quite happy to take what I can get.

For instance the Ash Wednesday message from the White House was better than anything I've seen come from Churchmen in my entire lifetime, nevermind the head of government.

As opposed to no one, but since you mentioned these figures:
Merkel is in a personal crusade to destroy German culture and Germans, all in the name of their new god, multiculturalism;
Macron had police officers fighting firefighters in a trashed Champs Elysees, which shows how much of a great politician he is;
Sanchez took a personal vendetta in the name of the defunct Spanish socialist republic and attacks corpses and monks.

But back to Putin.
I'm not going against him based on his latest moves against Russian democracy to become president for life, but on the fact that he's seen by many as a great man, pious Orthodox leader, protector of Christians... the list goes on. Yes, eventually he performs some good deeds, such as helping Italy and fighting Isis, but in the old and dirty game of politics, nothing is done by mere good samaritanism.
Here in Brazil we often say:
Tell me who you walk with, and I'll tell you who you are.
Well, Putin often walks with Cuba, China, Iran.
