(Reuters) - Children were "sadistically tormented and also sexually abused" at a Catholic monastery in Pope Benedict's native Bavaria, according to a new report commissioned by the Roman Catholic Church.

A lawyer investigating accusations of abuse in a Benedictine monastery school in Ettal presented a final report to the Archdiocese of Munich and Freising Monday, including 173 pages of victims' accounts of abuse.

"My investigations quite clearly show that for decades up until around 1990, children and adolescents were brutally abused in the Ettal monastery," Thomas Pfister said in a statement.....

Yet no one says anything about the former Mayor of the city I grew up in who used to be a school teacher and would do things like hang kids out the 3rd floor window, lock kids in closets, not let them eat lunch and generally torture kids there. In fact, when he ran for mayor the school teachers voted for him not because they liked him, but because they wanted to get him out of the schools.

What does brutal abuse actually mean?

I am all for corporal punishment for boys.  I used to get whacked by the teachers at school and I can say that in just about every case probably deserved it.  And in the few cases I didn't deserve it I had gotten away with thrice as many incidents without getting whacked.

Sexual abuse is one thing but giving boys a good smack when they deserve it is entirely another.  A telling off means nothing to some adolescents.  They just laugh in your face.

If they stubbed cigarettes out on them then I would agree that that was "sadistically tormented" but if they just whacked them when they fooled around then I'd reckon that was just discipline.

I think in this case it refers solely to sexual abuse and torment.  Not disciplinary.

At least that's how I read the article.
