Uproar against Berlusconi receiving Holy Communion - Augstine Baker - 04-21-2010

On Saturday the Italian Prime Minister received Holy Communion on the tongue before a camera.

[Kreuz.net]on the 17th of April the Italian Prime Minister Silvio Berlusconi (73) received Holy Communion on the tongue.

He's caused quite a bit of controversy, since, thankfully, but we can't help that the press is enjoying his discomfort a little too much. What's especially jarring is the cavalier way that he has campaigned in the past for a rules change, as if he were addressing a memo for he Pope, "oh, yes, Papa, you must change the rule for refusing communion to lechers."

Berlusconi is catholic baptized.
Possibly he just repented of his scandalous life, confessed and changed his mind. Anybody may provide clues?
In addition I believe he is against abortion.
Why then to refuse him the Eucharist?
Don't judge lest to be judged.

Berlusconi is divorced and going through another divorce, but that shouldn't prohibit him from Communion since he is single and no longer living in sin with his second "wife."

...and before his government fell no long ago, he told the P.M.'s of the Low Countries that their policies on infanticide and euthanasia made them just like the Nazis. The EU retaliated.

It's a good thing that Italians can still be scandalized by such things.  Berlusconi was already refused Holy Communion by Benedict and there has been a chill in relations between his government and the Vatican.

Moreover, telling the Pope how to run his show is no way to get clemency or a blind eye when he engages in a serious malpractice the Catholic Faith.

If he wants to received Holy Communion, he needs to square his situation away.  He hasn't given any indication that's what he's going to do, on the contrary, he's been pushing hard to be excused, and leaking nasty stories in the press about the Church.

He's just going to have to come to Canossa in his bare feet....

It's nice to play Santa Claus with other people's sanctifying grace, but in reality it's just as presumptuous as assuming someone is not, but Berlusconi needs to make some public admissions of his penitence before many Italians will be willing to cut him some slack on this.  I predict more media coverage of this.

Pretty generous with other people's judgements aren't we?  Why don't you actually become acquainted with the story before you put on your high hat and get all Obama on me.

Well, I could do that. You could also write something interesting and informative about it on this forum or even on your blog and then link to it, but you failed to do that.

It's in the links provided.  If you had read the material, you'd notice that Berlusconi hasn't offered any amends for his deeds, contrarily, he expects the Church to change its rules.

He needs to make some public statement of contrition.  In any event, the Italian people are angry abouit it, and I don't know about you, but I think it's generally a good sign, unless it's primarily motivated by political hostillity.
