Vast fraud in abuse cases - SoCalLocal - 01-02-2011

In a stunning ten-page declaration recently submitted to the Los Angeles County Superior Court, veteran attorney Donald H. Steier stated that his investigations into claims of sexual abuse by Catholic priests have uncovered vast fraud and that his probes have revealed that many accusations are completely false.

Counselor Steier has played a role in over one hundred investigations involving Catholic clergy in Los Angeles. In his missive Mr. Steier relayed, "One retired F.B.I. agent who worked with me to investigate many claims in the Clergy Cases told me, in his opinion, about ONE-HALF of the claims made in the Clergy Cases were either entirely false or so greatly exaggerated that the truth would not have supported a prosecutable claim for childhood sexual abuse" (capital letters are his).

I had a law professor in college who said that anything in the news quoted from a lawyer before the resolution of his case can be disregarded.

That said, I hope it's true.  Not that it will improve the popular perception of the Church...

An older priest in Denver had a nebulous accusation from 40 years ago. He had a perfect priestly reputation and was of retirement age. He was immediately removed from ministry of course with his name plastered all over the papers.  His reputation was ruined simply by an unproven accusation. People who knew him said it was ridiculous.  And now it is in the news again as they found nothing to substantiate the accusation and he is returned to ministry. But really his reputation is ruined and he will retire. It is on the news today.

I also heard that there have b een more claims of abuse in the Denver school system in the past 6 months than all the accusations in the country against Catholic priests in 10 years! But that seems to not get  mentioned.  An accusation against a priest (who may even have died)  from decades ago is given weight and the track teacher who seduces a 14 year old has a back page one day news.

Our priests are held to another standard for sure and must walk a fine  line all the time.
