Cardinal Mahony: A Great Bishop? - Jitpring - 02-14-2011

Check out this interview with the incoming Bishop of the Los Angeles Archdiocese:

http://www.latimes.com/news/local/la-me-gomez-qa-20110213,0,3426077.story?page=1

Note, among others, this line:

"And now I'm going to be the successor of Cardinal Mahony, who has been also archbishop of Los Angeles for 25 years. Both of them are great examples for me of how to be a bishop."

Is this some kind of joke? Can he really be serious?

What sort of succession speech doesn't involve praising the last man in office? Even Popes do that, I imagine.

Hopefully it is nothing more than a civil formality, such as congressmen calling each other "gentleman" when they are really thinking "low life dirt bag" etc.

Well, assure you that if Bishop Fellay was taking over for Mahony his speech wouldn't involve praising the man and his so called "accomplishments"!

I'm sure there was an implied "not" in there somewhere.

And though I'm not one to defend Mahony, he probably has some redeeming quality.  What it is, I don't know.  But I'm sure there's something.  God doesn't make junk.

There's more to be troubled about in that interview than his praise for Cardinal Mahony.

Yes. And the rest of it makes me think that his praise of Mahony really was serious. Incredible.

No, but Malooney sure did a fine job of turning His work into garbage. What a pathetic loss of a potentially good fella. I hope God is merciful on him. I know a bunch of people who wouldn't be!

An honorable exception. But that's precisely why Fellay isn't ever going to be Archbishop of Los Angeles.

Well... you could always come back to L.A. and suffer with me.
