Compare and Contrast: Sts. de Sales & Liguori - Jackson K. Eskew - 09-26-2011

If anyone can point me to a good essay or essays comparing and contrasting the spiritualities of Sts. Francis de Sales and Alphonsus Liguori, I'd appreciate it.

Is this a homework question?

Beat me to it!  Maybe for priest school.

Basically, Saint Alphonsus was very big on abandoning the world by entering the religious life and Saint Francis (de Sales) was all about helping people abandon the world whilst staying it it due to their vocations.  That's pretty much the gist of it.

From what I know, St. Alphonsus was NOT "very big on abandoning the world by entering the religious life."

But I don't really want to do someone else's homework and it does sound like that's what we're being asked to do here.

I didn't mean that in the sense of living a cloistered life.  Saint Alphonsus after all was all about preaching to the poor.  But he was also very big on the religious life and greatly encouraged it (Read some of his letters regarding the religious life).  Where as Saint Francis was very focused on the devout life whilst still "in" the world.

And I don't think we can just brush off his question because it's his "homework"..

This isn't homework. They're two of my favorites and I want to understand them better.

I seem to recall that one difference between them is that Alphonsus followed Aquinas in maintaining that the Incarnation of the Logos wouldn't have occured without the Fall, while Francis maintained otherwise.
