Conclave of 1914 - Leonard - 02-06-2012

What are the likely reasons for the selection of Giacomo della Chiesa (Benedict XV), who had been a cardinal for only three months?

Re: Conclave of 1914 - Gerard - 02-06-2012

To deprive the Church of having Cardinal del Val as Pope.

God's providential will.

Cardinal O'Connell of Boston, was an hour late to vote in the conclave - he had to take ship to Rome. He was a great friend of Cardinal del Val.

Is Benedict XV a bad guy now?

He is occasionally cited as a cyrpto-modernist, or not so crypto.  He got in trouble with the Holy Office before his election; the memo about suspicions of his modernism was on his desk when he assumed the office of Pope.  When you start villifying the Holy Fathers, that train don't stop.  Hence the SSPV, and: http://willingcatholicmartyr.blogspot.com/2009/05/benedict-xv-was-antipope.html

Some people need some sense slapped into them  :P

Re: Conclave of 1914 - Vetus Ordo - 02-06-2012

I've never looked into the pontificate of Benedict XV too much.

It seemed pretty average overall. He had to deal with WW1 and that was about it.

Didn't Benedict XV invoke some help from the Blessed Virgin just within months prior to her appearance at Fatima in May 1917?

Re: Conclave of 1914 - Walty - 02-07-2012

I think he condemned Modernists, but wasn't as staunch on it as his predecessor.  Of course, who was more staunch on defending the faith than St. Pius X?
