I like her too! She looks a bit sad though.

She's the most well known Filipina Marian image, and my father is buried in the cemetery section dedicated to her.

I've seen several beautiful Spanish, baroque images of the BVM from PI, but I don't know their names. The second image you posted, with the long haired Sto. Niño, is excellent.

This particular image of Our Lady is carved from ivory and protected the Philippines from Dutch protestant invasion.

Re: My favorite Marian images from the Philippines - Matamoros - 09-14-2012

I was just at the Sto Domingo church, where La Naval is enshrined, on Thursday. To be standing there in front of the image of the Blessed Mother was just... a truly indescribable experience. In pre-war Manila, La Naval was the most eminent of the Virgin's many titles venerated in the country, drawing devotees from the ranks of high society. Sadly WWII did much to dampen that.  Anyway when I was going home, I found myself humming the Despedida a la Virgen, which is a hymn sung in her honor at the close of every Mass in the days leading to the Feast of Our Lady of the Most Holy Rosary.

P.S., Ntra Senora de la Paz y Buen Viaje is technically Mexcian, from Acapulco, like the Nazareno of Quiapo; but indeed the devotion to these two is so strong that they might as well have sprung up from the soil
