Foods that help you look young

You may be able to reduce the appearance of aging and wrinkly skin by eating certain foods, researchers have found.

Holy basil -- rejuvenates and helps your mental health

Nutrition researchers in Australia, Greece, and Sweden studied 450 people aged 70 and over to see if the foods they ate related to how wrinkly they looked.

They found that the least wrinkled people mainly ate or drank the following foods:

legumes (such as peas, beans, lentils, peanuts, and alfalfa)
    vegetables
    fish
    tea
    low-fat milk products.

The most wrinkled people ate more full-fat dairy foods, butter, margarine, red meat, fizzy soft drinks, cakes, and pastries.
Anitoxidant retards wrinkles

A researcher at Hebrew University's Faculty of Agriculture, Food and Environmental Quality Sciences has found that a certain antioxidant also fights wrinkles.

Dr. Orit Bossi managed to isolate an antioxidant from plants that slows the aging process.

She said that because some antioxidants oxidize quickly, they lose their efficiency over time. But the antioxidant she researched can withstand high temperatures, is soluble in water, and does not oxidize easily.

This means it stays effective over time and counters the breakdown of collagen fibers in the skin.

Antioxidants fight free radicals in your body that cause a breakdown of many body tissues, including your skin. They include Vitamin E, Vitamin C, and the antioxidant EGCG in green tea.

In small quantities, free radicals are not harmful to your body. But when there is an excess of free radicals, as happens in normal aging or because of excessive exposure to ultra-violet radiation, the result is that the collagen and elastin fibers in your skin break down. Your skin then loses its elasticity, wrinkles appear, and of course you look older.
Grapes and red wine may prevent aging

Results of a study released in June 2008 showed that a compound called resveratrol — a natural compound found in red grapes, mulberries, peanuts, and red wine, may slow the effects of aging while protecting your heart.

Researchers had found in earlier studies that mice that were fed a high-fat diet and were also given resveratrol lived longer than mice that didn't get any of the compound.

Resveratrol seems to offer protection against heart disease by acting as an antioxidant, antimutagen, and anti-inflammatory.

So, to the list of 5 foods above, add those that contain resveratrol as No.6.
Holy basil

An Indian relative of the common basil plant is known as “holy basil” (Ocimum tenuiflorum or Ocimum sanctum), a herb long used in Indian medicine to treat headaches, colds, stomach problems, heart disorders, and a number of other ailments. (See photo above.)

Researchers from Poona College of Pharmacy in Maharashtra, India, studied holy basil to check its anti-oxidant and anti-ageing properties.

They found it acts as a rejuvenation remedy, and promotes a youthful state of physical and mental health by eliminating harmful molecules and protecting against damage caused by some free radicals in the heart, liver, and brain.

One of the researchers (Dr Shinde) said: “The study validates the traditional use of herb as a youth-promoting substance in the Ayurvedic system of medicine.”

So, to the six foods listed above, add holy basil as No.7.
Anti-wrinkle recipe

While there are various ways to lose weight (diets, hypnosis, etc.), the anti-wrinkle, anti-aging ingredients of foods seem to be Vitamin C, calcium, phosphorus, magnesium, zinc, iron, and resveretrol.

It is interesting that God gave Adam and Eve a vegetarian diet, and this would have been the pattern for generations. Certainly we know that the early generations had extremely long lives. (Adam lived 930 years.)

The Book of Genesis even records that Esau sold his birthright for pottage (soup or stew) made of lentils.

During the time of the early patriarchs there wasn't the abundance of sugary cakes and pastries, margarine, and soft drinks that are around today, so the Genesis diet was obviously a very healthy one.

The Ten Per Cent Diet that has helped many people lose weight slowly but steadily is based on the biblical principle of tithing.

Footnote

Many people do not realize that a huge cause of wrinkles is exposure to the sun. By far, most of the symptoms of premature aging are caused by excessive time in the sun. Even though the sun is necessary for our survival on earth, and some foods may help retard some signs of aging, overdosing on sunlight will age you faster.
