Curious about joining an SSPX Monastery - drewmeister2 - 06-06-2005

Recently, I went to visit Benedictine College in Kansas. I found out though that even though it is a conservative college, it still has liberal theology, and realized for the first time all colleges will most likely be like this.

It has made me consider joining an SSPX Monastery. But, Im not sure if they would accept me, since I am not able to go to a SSPX Chapel, since my mom doesnt want me to not be with the family for Mass on Sunday (and she likes the Novus Ordo, not the TLM :() Do you think one of the SSPX Monasteries may accept me?

Also, there is a new Eastern Catholic college opening up soon, and I have, over the past month, been discerning if God is calling me East. If I become Eastern Catholic, I will most likely become a monk.

I dont know what to do. Any advice?

Thanks :)

Not to be mean, but if you are still worrying about what your family wants you to do I think you need a little more time before you start applying at any trad monasteries, SSPX or otherwise. What guarantees does the abbot have that you are serious about the Traditional Faith? You do realize that living the monastic life means cutting all particular friendships and to give up your family for your entire life? Fr Cyprian (in Silver City NM) is going to want to see a little more effort on your part if you are serious about the religious life I would think. There seems to be a great number of men wishing to enter there and you are going to have to be doing something currently in your life to stand out among the others. What have you done or are you doing to prepare yourself if you believe this is your calling? These are the type of questions you are going to be asked if you pursue this life. There is a vocations retreat coming up in the next week for the SSPX. I suggest you start there, or, if you can not make that, start with a five day Ignatian retreat and go from there. It sounds like you are putting the cart before the horse, but I do not know all you have done so I can not say for sure. Just take this as some friendly advice from someone that has considered the monastic life, as well as had an ex fiance that was in Carmel for 4 years and heard much about the inner workings of the religious life.

Thanks for the reply, but I can't go to SSPX Chapels regularly. My mom wouldnt let me. And yes, she can take my car away so I can't drive there if I try to sneak it. Its not worth it. Believe me.

And Im only 16, its not like Im 18, and am still under her "control".

Thanks again! :)

Drew,

I think that PaxTecum has some good ideas, and one specific thing did stick out at me. We do indeed need to be able to surrender our desires of pleasing our family and friends. If we continue to perform worldly duties in order to please them, who are we truly serving?

As many of us (young lads) will attest to, family isn't the easiest thing to help us in our spiritual journey. Many times, it is the family that can actually hinder our progress. We must continue to pray for their full conversions. Though, to be truly humble (which is very useful for a religious), we must realize that we are not perfect either. We may have made some sort of outward conversion, but there's so much further to go.

By Christian charity towards our family, prayers, and various "acts of God" (I love insurance terminology! =P), they will come to see why you have chosen your path. Just continue to work at it. Even if you can't make it out to your desired chapel, spend time with Jesus (both at home and in the Blessed Sacrament). He will assist you.

Also, do not forget that we are here on the forums to support you too. Surely, that is one reason you are posting. Please do post special prayer requests here. I'm sure that we can "storm Heaven" (as many others have requested). Perhaps, we could arrange special groups of people to pray for each of your needs. The first group can pray for vocation. The second for your mother. etc.etc. Don't be afraid to ask.

As for me, I'll be sure to include you in my prayers and petitions this evening!

Drew,

There are many other traditional monasterys not affiliated with the SSPX. Have you considered them?

There are?
What are their names, please?

Thanks!

Drew,

I would follow the course laid out by Pax, firstly I would start with the Ignatian retreat. This should be a good time to begin the discernment process as to your vocation. I'm sure that if you write to anyone of the SSPX priors they would give you some guidance.

I too will pray for you.

Do not forget your duty to respect your parents and to be obedient to them. You will be able to make your own decisions soon enough.
