Married Man Ordained Catholic Priest - Poche - 02-28-2014

For the first time, the Maronite Catholic Church will ordain a married man to the priesthood in the United States, the St. Louis archdiocesan newspaper reported.

The ordination of Deacon Wissam Akiki will take place in St. Louis on February 28.

The Maronite Catholic Church is among the Eastern Catholic churches in full communion with the Holy See that ordain married men to the priesthood. At the request of the bishops of the United States, however, the Holy See in 1929 decreed that only celibate priests could serve in Eastern Catholic parishes in the US. Similar decrees were issued for Australia and Canada.

Some Eastern Catholic prelates have permitted married men ordained in the Middle East to serve in American parishes. Pope Francis has dispensed Deacon Akiki from the current norm and has not abandoned the norm, a Maronite spokesman told the Associated Press.

Such a dispensation is not unprecedented. Catholic News Service reported in 2011 that “Archbishop Cyril Vasil’, secretary of the Congregation for Eastern Churches, [said] that the Vatican reconfirmed the general ban in 2008, ‘but in individual cases, in consultation with the national bishops’ conference, a dispensation can be given’ allowing the ordination.”

Not only should this be seen as a completely normal event, the fact that this is going against a "norm" isn't fair to the Eastern Catholics. They've been pushed around a lot in this country by the Latin Catholics (Bishop Ireland comes to mind) and they deserve better. That they aren't allowed to ordain married men is against the general practices of their Churches.

Agree with Farmer.

100% agree with Farmer. Imposing the practice of mandatory celibacy is the reason the American Carpatho-Russian Orthodox Diocese exists in the US - a majority of Ruthenian Catholic immigrants were scandalized by this infringement of their valid traditions and became Orthodox as a result. Even if one doesn't agree with becoming Orthodox over this, traditional Latin Catholics can certainly sympathize with having sacred traditions trampled on!

If these Churches sui juris are really sui juris, then let them manage their affairs! Does subsidiarity not apply to the government of the Churches?

No biggie, Latin priests are ordained all the time when they come from Protestant denominations.

Re: Married Man Ordained Catholic Priest - loggats - 02-28-2014

...this isn't the same thing at all, austenbosten. Eastern/Oriental Catholics should not have Latin tradition imposed on them as somehow normative.

I don't know why this is news.  It's not news when a Byzantine Catholic bishop ordains a married man to the priesthood.
