As an unsophisticate person from a hick part of the world, I wonder what a diplomat in the Vatican does all day. It must be the cushiest job on the planet.

Have sinecures of this sort increased or decreased in number with the rise of modern bureaucracies?

Listen to and spread diplomatic gossip around.

Re: France tries to impose gay ambassador to Vatican - Poche - 04-16-2015

The French government is still awaiting a Vatican response to the nomination of Laurent Stefanini as ambassador to the Holy See.

Stefanini’s nomination has been on hold for three months, and French media outlets have reported that Pope Francis chose to “freeze the dossier” because of reports that the proposed French ambassador is homosexual.

A spokesman for the French foreign ministry said that the government is still waiting for the Vatican’s response to the nomination, and added: “Laurent Stefanini has all the qualities necessary for this post.”

The Vatican has made no comment on the nomination. It is established practice in the diplomatic world that a country may decline to accept an ambassador’s nomination, with no explanation required.

So much for "who am I to judge?" I guess that only applies to those who are contrite and are sincerely seeking God.
