Petitions at Mass

I'm a relatively new convert (I'm about to start my 4th year in the Church at Easter), and I'm curious about something pertaining to petitions and the mass. Basically, my question is whether I can offer up a mass for a specific intention (not officially, but just in my heart before the mass)? I realize one of the four ends of the mass is petition, but I'm not clear what the theology behind assisting at mass with a particular petition is. I know I can offer the abundant merits I receive from the Eucharist  for others, right?

Any help?

I often offer the Holy Sacrifice I attend for different intentions.

I mean, you are right there in His Presence - what better time to petition Our Lord?
