Poche, it to me is an echo of the way we approached the Faith when I was young. We were taught to offer up our daily crosses to the Lord and co-operate in our Salvation. All suffering no matter how minimal has merit if in the state of Grace. To be brutally honest the world changed against this as affluence spread in America.
It was much easier to see Jesus when we were the lower middle class and the working poor. It took real effort for a family to say have a First Communion party for their child. It took weeks of saving pennies and planning. These are the reasons, we saw Jesus, though we were sinners just like now. Many mothers pleaded with Jesus to get that "good roast" for that party for all the relatives. When our pockets became very deep, pleading went out of style, we bought the very best.
