The Papal Fistula

The fistula was once a common liturgical accoutrement in many parishes, particularly in the Middle Ages, when the faithful would occasionally receive under both species. However, unlike the Pope, the faithful would not place their mouths directly on the straw. The Priest or Deacon would trap a portion of the consecrated wine by plugging the top end with his finger and releasing the contents in the communicant's mouth. Here's an example from the 13th century (if I recall correctly):
