Just by way of contrast/comparison, in the Divine Liturgy of St. John Chrysostom, the priest ALWAYS begins by chanting: "Blessed is the Kingdom of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit: now and ever, and unto ages of ages." to which the people respond, "Amen", after which begins the Great Ektenia (Litany).  Greetings and jokes and announcements are saved for much later.

Along with the coffee and cigars I hope?
