On the recommendation of a forum member (sorry I can't remember who, but I owe you one), I have been reading Goodbye, Good Men and I am absolutely stunned by what I've read so far. I'm only halfway through the book right now because I've had to put it down out of disgust often.
Spoiler alert!!!
The book talks about U.S. seminaries pushing a liberal agenda by expelling and black balling orthodox seminarians. It identifies specific people and seminaries that purposely harassed, belittled, and outright threatened young seminarians that refused to go along with their views.
In regards to homosexuality, there were/are many seminaries that protect both homosexual seminarians and faculty. If a seminarian was seen as anti-homosexual, he would receive evaluations stating that he was too rigid and unable to adapt to modern times. If the faculty really had it in for someone, they would send them to psychologists who would then recommend that the seminarian not be ordained. Some seminaries used psychologists who were previous seminarians themselves that left because they opposed Church teaching on homosexuality. The psychological evaluations follow the seminarian, so if they try another diocese, the diocese will get the same evaluation. One seminarian stated that he was assigned a mentor who happened to be a seminarian that had hit on him many times before. The mentor is now a priest.
There's also sections on nuns who were successful in driving seminarians away that were opposed to women priests. These nuns had complete autonomy and power, and they used this power to blackball seminarians.
Perhaps the most shocking thing to me was the outright hatred for the Rosary and Eucharistic Adoration. Any kind of requests for Adoration or prayer groups were denied. At one seminary, the seminarians formed a group of thirty men to pray the Rosary every night. When the faculty told them to stop because they weren't being inclusive enough, they started paying the Rosary in different languages. Then the faculty told them to stop because the floor would fall through under the weight of thirty guys. There was no attempt to a facilitate a prayer group, just resistance (they could have let them pray in the chapel). This story alone has convinced me to pray all three mysteries of the Rosary everyday because it is so obvious now how much Satan hates the Rosary.
I'm making this post in this forum because it's so obvious to me now that we are in for the fight of our lives. I always knew there was a crisis in the Church, but this book has shown me just how bad it is.
