As reported in the Navy Times, 9th February 2009, co-founder of IHS Press, John Sharpe, had a date scheduled in the federal district court, Norfolk, Virginia, USA, with Military.com for 24th February, 2009.

Military.com had reproduced on its website an article published in the Virginia Pilot newspaper that, to quote the complaint, "make Sharpe appear to be a racist, an anti-Semite, a bigot, a war-monger, and they impute to him an unfitness to serve in his capacity as Lieutenant Commander in the United States Navy".

Lt. Cmdr. Sharpe was seeking defamation damages of $3,350,000 from Military.com for causing him to "suffer damage to his good name and character".

On 19th February, 2009, Military.com came to an agreeable out-of-court financial settlement with Lt. Cmdr. Sharpe and published a retraction on its website.

John Sharpe's defamation case against Landmark Communications, owners of the Virginia Pilot, is reported by the Navy Times to be scheduled for April, 2009. Lt. Cmdr. Sharpe is "seeking $5 million from the Pilot and another $700,000 in punitive damages".

What's the background on this?  Why was the Virginia Pilot claiming LCDR Sharpe appeared "to be a racist, an anti-Semite, a bigot, a war-monger, and they impute to him an unfitness to serve in his capacity as Lieutenant Commander in the United States Navy"?
