Well... Hilaire Belloc did not agree that the moral rot of the hierarchy was responsible for the Reformation.  That's why I was hesitant to say it was directly responsible.  He knew more history than I probably will ever know.

As for Protestantism leading to the Enlightenment etc., I totally agree.
