Oh, there's no doubt that a great many people greeted the Nazis as liberators from the Soviets, and it's understandable.  But, as Tobri pointed out, the manner in which the Nazis treated the conquered Ukrainians and Russians showed that they were not simply Western Christians on a holy crusade against Bolshevism.  They were also going to do with the Slavic East whatever they wanted.
