Book on the High Middle Ages

The books by Regine Pernoud are good, also Thomas Costain. But you might consider reading the authors from the Middle Ages themselves to get a picture of thier life: Chaucer is always good to start. Some of the minor historians are back in print, too; the Illustrated History by Matthew Paris is interesting, it gives a good picture of English life.
