french aristocracy being made abbots/abbesses
from my understanding under the ancient regime nobility were also commonly made honorary abbots/abbesses of monasteries, was this done only to widows or to anyone? also did they take any kind of vow (obviously they kept on living rich if they did) and were these titles titular or were they made abbots of actual monasteries, and if so did the title come with any responsibilities like fund raising or something?
