Most of the ones I saw when I was in Washington, D.C. were neo-Byzantine, which seemed to be some sort of rebellion against both the neoclassical style of the capital in general, as well as the neo-Gothic style of the Episcopalian National Cathedral district.

It was designed by Latrobe, the same guy who designed the Whitehouse and Capital Building. The bishop went with this style for the first cathedral in the US because it was the most "American" style in his mind.
