Definition of "bad companions"?

What is the traditional catholic definition of "bad companions"? I was reading St. John Bosco's vision of hell as well as St. John Vianney, and they both said that many souls are damned because of bad companions.

Are bad companions:
-non-catholics?
-liberal NO catholics?
