To be fair, he also isn't too keen on the Sacred Heart devotion and almost anything else that isn't drawing directly and exclusively from Liturgy. A lot of what he says is interesting, but the candle attack was the last straw.

And yep, I do think that anybody who rejects Marian devotions (especially the rosary and Lourdes/Fatima, both of which he's characterised as "hysterical apparitions") is in a troubled place.

The same email also said that praying the rosary was "rustic". 

A young man entered the coach of a train in a small university town in France. The ink was scarcely dry on his newly acquired diploma.

As the train sped off for Paris, he took his seat in the rear of the coach near an elderly gentleman who seemed to be dozing. "Yes, sir, and if you wish, I can send you some illuminating books."

"Very well," said the old man, preparing to leave as the train came to a stop. "You may send them to this address." He handed the young man a card, which read:

Thanks for the CE article, Vetus.  It's amazing what people start to be almost dogmatic about once they've rejected tradition.  I suppose there's some sort of vacuum that needs to be filled.

If so, picking holes in liturgical practices is the most bizarre way he could have gone about doing it (and I have never worn my hair in pigtails and never intend to)  ;D

Sounds more like a variety of unbalanced ultra-trad rather than a modernist. He may be referencing the pre-Reformation practice of only having two candles on the altar at most. Someone mentioned Patricius' blog on here earlier. He would have the same sorts of opinions about Marian apparitions, but he violently rejects any missal before 1955, and considers Pius X to be a modernist.


I don't think having six candles on the altar is wrong, but I believe it's preferable to place them on a reredos behind the altar, rather than on the altar itself. The less "stuff" on the surface of the altar, the better, because it's a symbol of Christ Himself.

I've just been sent an angry email by a "friend" about a painting of mine. Long story short - he says that, amongst other things, the use of six candlesticks ("and a crucifix") on the altar during mass is an abuse, and I'm "perpetuating" that by depicting it. The picture was intended to be hung (with others) at an exhibition in our local parish community centre. What is his problem? Or is it my problem  ???

The best thing now is to pray for him.

He's another sad example of Modern Catholicism that has run its course.

The thing is, he'd call us Modernists for practicing these devotions!

Anyway, prayer seems to be the only option right now. I'm still quite angry.

This guy sounds like Patricius from Liturgiae Causa.  He has been recently ranting about Lourdes.
