When is it right to reveal a confidence?

I have not found that keeping things in confidence leads to lying.  Sometimes people assume things that are not true, but I cannot recall ever directly telling a lie to keep a secret.
I guess it applies to real life more than it does online.  Online you can just not post anything about it, or not respond to direct questions.  But in real life, when people are face to face, and questions are asked, you either have to say that you won't answer because of keeping confidence, or lie to cover it up.
