8-24-2011

On August 15, while at the Universite d'Ete de la FSSPX held at St-Malo, France, the SSPX’s Superior General, Bishop Bernard Fellay, confirmed the news that he and his two Assistants have been invited to meet with Cardinal William Levada, Prefect for the Congregation of the Doctrine of the Faith (and the Ecclesia Dei Commission) in Rome on September 14.

On June 17, during his sermon for the priestly ordinations held at Winona, Minnesota, Bishop Fellay stated:

The truth is that Cardinal Levada has called me to Rome and it appears that it will be around the middle of September. That’s the only thing I know. It’s about the discussions we had with Rome. After these discussions, it had been said that “the documents will be given to the higher authorities.” These are the exact words. That’s the only thing I know about the future. All the rest is made up. Please don’t run after these rumors.

According to the agenda given to the Superior General, the purpose of this meeting is to give a final evaluation of the doctrinal discussions between Rome and the SSPX which have occurred since October 2009.

Bishop Fellay also stated on August 15 that no other specifics are known at this time.

SSPX Germany is describing this meeting in a pretty different tone (rough google translation):

Quote: The Superior General and his two assistants, Father Niklaus Pfluger and Father Alain-Marc Nely were on the 14 September 2011 asked for a special interview to Rome.

This tells Father Franz Schmidberger, District of Upper Germany, in the preface to the next handout.

Literally it means:

"It is in this sense, we ask for your prayers to heaven for 14 September. On this day, the Feast of the Exaltation of the Cross, is Mgr Fellay, our venerable Superior General, to an audience with Cardinal Levada, Prefect of the Congregation for the to discuss results of nearly two years of teaching dialogues between the Holy See and the SSPX. "

It is noteworthy that not only the superior general, but the General of the Priestly Fraternity of St. Pius X. is appointed by Rome. The General Council is composed of the Superior General and his two assistants.

In advance of the Priestly Fraternity of talking to the Holy See calls teaching under the direction of SE Bishop de Galarreta, which ran in very good climate.

It is generally believed that it will rotate at the meeting to the canonical situation of the Brotherhood.

Pope Benedict XVI. On 21 January 2009, the decree of excommunication withdrawn in 1988. (Decree read) Since then, the Brotherhood is officially no longer "excommunicated", however, the question of the canonical status is not yet answered.

Opponents of the Priestly Fraternity of St. Pius X, especially in the German episcopate, had in the recent past, this issue open again used as a pretext to refuse to cooperate with the Brotherhood. Recent examples are the first Mass of Father Jeindl home in the Diocese of Vienna and the national pilgrimage to Altötting in July this year.

All Catholics, the sacraments in the churches and chapels of the Society of St. Pius X. received in Germany, are asked to include this meeting on the Feast of Exaltation of the Cross in their prayers.
