The 'African' is actually the 'Moor of Friesing' taken from the Arms of that city. He was Archbishop of Munich and Friesing and it is an heraldic allusion to that fact.

Has anyone noticed the irony of the Papal Tiara that was presented to the Holy Father, featuring his coat of arms (minus the tiara) on the ribbons that hang from the back?

That is really bizzare.

That is really bizzare.

Actually it looks to me like the two ribbons are different.  One is the coat-of-arms with tiara and the other is coat-of-arms without (perhaps in deference to the fact that this one is the "official one").
