Why do some people receive the gift of faith and not others?

I'm also deathly afraid of flying.  I've known for a while it is because when one flies, you completely turn control of your life and safety over to someone else.

If predestination is true, then ultimately, I have no control over my salvation.

God does have control of our lives and safety (thank God!).  But unlike the pilot  He gives us free will, and in only a secondary yet a real way He gives us control, without giving up His.  Do good, go to heaven this is still true... but it is God who must be choosing and doing all good in us, as the primary cause. It must be God, all goodness is His (the evil is ours - be humble!).  I know this makes you feel like a puppet (and you will say, that's it,  period), but that is not the case.  Give yourself over to God and be free. Don't fight mystery.
