Get a tall glass. Put most of a tablespoon of powdered sugar in it (a tad sweeter than most recipes). Put about 2 or 3 tablespoons of lemon juice on top of that. Stir it well. Add a few jiggers of gin (what would fill a couple of shot-glasses, using more or less as you like). Stir again. Add an inch or so of club soda. Stir. Fill glass with ice. Add more club soda 'til glass is full and stir lightly so as to not destroy the bubbles from the club soda.
 
Called a "gin fizz." If an orange slice and cherry are used to garnish it, it's a "Tom Collins."
