Doesn't the prophesy relate to the name taken by the Cardinal upon his accession to the Throne of St. Peter though?

No it's a lot more vague than that. John Paul II (whose corresponding prophecy by St Malachy is "labour of the sun" or some such) was born on the day of a solar eclipse and was buried on the day of one too. So it's not strictly related to the new name.

Is that an overly simplistic view?   ???

Can anyone explain why others are calling this a "silly" prophesy?

I think one of the reasons it is questioned is because there are many people who believe the prophecy to be a later forgery that was attributed to the saint. But I've always found it very interesting.

It's St Malachy's final prophecy concerning the papacy. The penultimate one is said to refer to Pope Benedict XVI. This is the one that refers to his successor:

In secutione extrema S.R.E. iedebit. Petrus Romanus, qui paicet oues in multis tribulationibus: quibus traniactis ciuitas iepticollis diruetur, & Iudex tremedus iudicabit populum iuum. Finis.

In the extreme persecution of the Holy Roman Church, there will sit. Peter the Roman, who will nourish the sheep in many tribulations; when they are finished, the city of seven hills will be destroyed, and the dreadful judge will judge his people. The end.
