I would likewise like the answer to this.  My understanding is that to violate the oath they take is to incur an excommunication latae sententiae.  If they lied to God, why would they tell the truth to the media?

There are always cardinals who spill the beans, which is how we know a bit about almost every conclave.

And how do we know the beans they spill are the true beans?  They took an oath.  If they lied to God, why would they tell the truth to the media or anyone else for that matter?
