Cells cloned from aborted babies used in food processing

This is so creepy and outrageous.

Quote:    The biotech company Senomyx creates novel flavor enhancing compounds for the processed food industry in order to make foods and beverages that taste good while reducing sugar and salt content. Customers include Pepsi Co., Ajinomoto Co. (the maker of aspartame and meat glue), Nestlé and others
The genetically engineered flavor enhancers work by triggering taste receptors on your tongue, effectively tricking your taste buds into sensing sweetness, saltiness, or “coolness”
Senomyx has created a taste testing system that provides scientists with biochemical responses and electronic readouts when a flavor ingredient interacts with their patented receptor, letting them know whether or not they’ve “hit the mark” in terms of flavor. This process uses human kidney cells originating from an electively aborted human fetus
These fetal kidney cells (HEK293) have been cloned for decades, as they offer a reliable way to produce new proteins using genetic engineering. Senomyx has engineered HEK293 cells to function like human taste receptor cells
Flavor enhancers do not need to be listed on food labels, falling instead under the generic category of artificial and/or natural flavors

This is kind of an old story. Pepsi had refused to stop using the company which did this but I think they (Pepsi) *did* stop using them after a public outcry.

Yep, I believe Pepsi did stop using them - not that I buy their products anyway.  This is just another good reason to avoid all packaged/processed foods.

Yes, I've heard this story several months back.  I also used to know the list of companies that use that stuff but like others have already said, if you avoid processed junk food you'll probably be safe from that.

The fact that companies were shamed into no longer doing this doesn't negate the fact that it was a disgusting thing to do in the first place. I wonder where else aborted fetal cells are being used and we're not aware of it?  >sad

Lot's of things probably.  I'd basically write off the companies that participated in this program completely and consider their products off limits.  I'll have to look at the article again but Pepsi and Kraft Foods spring to mind.

So r the cloned proteins from aborted fetal kidney cells in the flavor enhancer?

No, [paraphrasing from above] the fetal kidney cells offer a reliable way to produce new proteins using genetic engineering. Senomyx has engineered HEK293 cells to function like human taste receptor cells.

So, the fetal cells are used in the testing of the flavor enhancers...

Just sick!! This article is just another sign of just how far society has fallen. My dh and I are in the process of removing ourselves from the "Market of the Beast" food industry. It's been a much harder than we thought it would be, but we are getting there....yippy! Thank you Lord Jesus for the graces to help us becoming more depended on your bounty, verses the world's evil systems.  Pray

I'm disgusted by it. But I am curious where those vegan liberals stand on this.
